Welcome to Leopold Little Athletics
Leopold Little Athletics Club was formed in 1976 and through its history has produced a number of outstanding junior athletes. Some of whom have gone on to represent Australia at Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Others have gone onto AFL careers. Many of our juniors have participated at Regional, State and National levels. During the season (which runs from October to March) athletes in age groups from under 8 through to under 16 compete in a variety of different events including sprints, distance, hurdles, walks, discus, shot put, high jump, long jump, triple jump and javelin (u/11’s up).
Championships: As well as the regular interclub competition, all athletes get the opportunity to compete in Relay Championships, PB Day, Handicap events and the Geelong Track & Field Championships.
On Track: Our under 6 & 7’s athletes participate in a program called “On Track”, where the young athletes learn how to run, jump and throw correctly. They also have the opportunity each week to do a couple of different events on track.
Training: Training is held at Leopold Primary School on Wednesday nights from 4.30 – 5.30pm. This is optional but is a great way to keep fit and improve your skills along with spending time with your friends! Please contact Wayne Visser 0400 991 156 if you have and queries regarding training.
Cross Country: During the winter months a number of our athletes participate in Cross Country which is run by GLAC and held at different venues around Geelong.
Club President Profile
Wayne is new to the role of Club President this season however he has been part of the club for the last five years. His son Luke is competing in the under 12’s this season.
Growing up Wayne was a member of the Horsham Little Athletics Club and to this day still holds the Under 13 discus record. Specialising in the throws events Wayne was found to have a natural ability for throwing the javelin which saw him change secondary schools so that he could train under Lindsay Burgoyne, a well respected Australian throws coach. Through-out Wayne’s secondary school years he was the Javelin Victorian State Champion for four years running and achieved 2nd and 3rd placings at National level. In 1990, as a 15 year old, Wayne was selected to travel and compete through-out the US and Canada.
Wayne now coaches Luke in the throws events, and will also be running the Club’s Wednesday night training sessions for our club members.Wayne Visser: Athletics Australia accredited Level 2 Intermediate Club Coach
